Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast, or NF for the rest of the review, is a tactical RPG from Red Art Games. The version for this review is for the Switch though it is also available on Steam; however, English is not supported there for some reason. As far as I can tell, there is no reason for this, but whatever; it’s just them shooting themselves in the foot and losing sales. Anyway, I am a sucker for a good tactical RPG, and I am also a fan of the Goblin Slayer anime. I have watched the subtitled and dubbed versions together several times with friends, so I was looking forward to diving into NF to see how they did it.
The story for NF is a spinoff of the main Goblin Slayer storyline but with a more lighthearted tone than the main series. This is a letdown because the tone of the show is what made it so great. The story revolves around a princess, now queen, returning to her kingdom after a long absence. And instead of immediately taking the throne, she runs the local adventurers’ guild. From there, you follow along as she recruits adventurers to eventually defeat the threat that arises over the course of the story. The story is told via visual novel segments like most modern JRPGs.
Due to the more lighthearted tone of the game, it doesn’t feel as gripping as the anime did. The story segments feel a lot longer than they are, but that is not to say it isn’t a good story for a video game; it’s not a good Goblin Slayer story, in my opinion. That being said, the game has some great characters, such as the Vampire Princess, the first character you recruit to help you. For some odd reason, she seemed weirdly focused on the main character’s virginity and it came off a little off-putting and almost out of place. The other characters felt like they would have fit into the main show for the most part.
The overall designs for the characters were terrific. I loved all the details in the main character’s outfit, and the polar bear priest was also excellent. The battles are where the game begins to drop off for me. It felt like a basic standard tactical RPG with no actual variations in the formula. This is a good thing, yet a bad thing. The only thing that felt different was the dice rolls for seeing how much damage a crit hit deals. Otherwise it has your standard set of classes you would expect. Can I recommend this game to people? I can and can not at the same time. The switch version is, on average, $49.99, so if you can find it on sale or a secondhand copy, I would get it. Otherwise, please wait until you find it on sale.
Pros:
- Great character designs
- Goblin Slayeresqe-themed video game
- Standard Tactical RPG
Cons:
- Lighthearted tone compared to the main show
- Standard Tactical RPG without much variation
