Flowstone Saga is a JRPG-style adventure for developers over at Impact Gameworks and is published by Doyoyo Games. At the start of playing the game for review, I didn’t realize that they published Tangledeep, a game I watched someone play. It took me a while to realize this when I started writing the review. It was a fun game, so I was not surprised when I was playing Flowstone that it felt familiar. Anyway, enough jabbering, let’s dive into what makes up Flowstone Saga.
The story revolves around the young adventurer Mirai and her pet fox Sprig as they roam around the backwaters of Oceans End, a group of islands at the end of the world. The game uses the town of New Riverstone as the core hub of the game. Mirai washed up on the shore here some time ago with no memory of who she was and has since ingrained herself in the town’s daily life. One day, she was trying to find fruit for her friend to make a delicious dessert, but she fell into a ruin where she discovered the Flowstone and her life changed forever. It’s literally, like the first 5 minutes of the game there, if that’s no spoilers, really.
As the game progresses, you interact with many interesting characters, from a job-skirting fisherman, a cat girl inventor, to even a muscle mommy blacksmith. You face off against various monsters and animals, pirates, and even an empire as you delve into the mystery of the ruins and who you are. The game uses a Tetris-style puzzle system for battles and gathering resources in the mine.
There are also puzzles where you are presented with several pieces and figure out how to arrange them to complete the layout they give you. Most, if not all, are so simple you end up overthinking it; at least, that was the case with me. Anyway, just as with Tetris, you arrange blocks to clear lines and set up combos; by doing so, you damage the enemies. As the game progresses, you unlock different powers that directly affect the flow of battle, and no pun is intended. The battles can be done in either real-time or hold mode. The latter is turn-based on combat.
There are various other systems, such as a fighting game combo fishing and a system where you can select multiple battle themes to play during battle. There is a lot more to the game that you discover as you play so that you won’t go into more detail. You will have to play the game to find out. Now, I have only one complaint about the game. That is the fact there is no area map or minimap in the game. It would help out a lot for me, but some gamers don’t need such frivolities. Honestly, for the price of 18$, you get a lot out of this game. Much more so than some $50 to $60 games. So, I can recommend this game to almost anyone.
Pros:
- Bang for your Buck gameplay
- Great story and dialogue
- Unique battle system
- Unique fishing system
Cons:
- No minimap or area map
