Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is one of the most anticipated games to be released in 2019. It has been exactly one year since Activision published Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 which was developed by Treyarch, and got a lot of flack for not having a campaign. However, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare rolled out with multiple different multiplayer game modes as well as various multiplayer maps, and they have a CAMPAIGN! Not only that, what makes this game unique is the ability to play multiplayer across all platforms, such as PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This cross-platform play is absolutely game-changing because this is a first for the franchise. Ironically enough, I was the one who wrote the review for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 on The Drastik Measure, so it was a no brainer that I would have expressed interest in reviewing this one.
After testing out the beta over the weekend, the game was in a pretty good state. Little issues here and there, I feel that I should address some of the problems I have encountered over the beta and see if they have fixed some of the mistakes. One issue I would like to address in beta is the ghost footsteps. What I mean about the ghost footsteps are some times the audio cue for the footsteps would vanish after you would hear them chasing an enemy or even worse when they are chasing you. Which really made it frustrating at times, especially in the multiplayer aspect. I am a very competitive person, and that really triggered me at times. They did fix this issue post-beta, and I feel that the audio cues in that aspect and other aspects are really on point. It seems that they address this issue in the full release and even made the sound effects more immersive wearing surround sound headphones!
I enjoyed the multiplayer aspect this time around. The maps felt very optimized compared to the beta and very polished. The different maps, along with the realism of breaching doors and actual tactical gameplay, really hit it out of the park. There are so many different multiplayer game modes to mention, so to save time, I’ll talk about a couple. One game that stands out is Ground War! This mode is nuts; you have the ability to play with up to 64 people on a single map, now add in the fact that you have the cross-platform play, and you would think this is a horror story waiting to happen. Not the case, the map, and the latency with other players on other platforms is handled very well. No matter what the game is, you are bound to get some latency issues and a little bit of lag, but again with all the factors, it did well. Take into consideration the vehicles you can use in this mode and the fact that the buildings are in such detail and the environment. The server did its job and held out really well.
Another multiplayer game mode that stands out to me is the Realism mode. Realism is not for the faint of heart and is for the extreme CoD players. There are no maps, no HUD, no death message: just you and your gun. Realism mode is a 5v5 match where there is no indication or knowledge of where you or your enemies are. Some will play the game mode as intended very tactical strategic, or some will go in with a run and gun attitude, which can be easy kills for you or make this the worst day of your life. There are still UAVs that can help you see your enemies. This mode is worth mentioning cause its a very clean, no unnecessary clutter of HUDs in your way, and it’s very unique.
One thing I should mention is the shotgun, especially in Realism mode for the run and gunners, seems a little bit overpowered. It’s really easy to go in with a shotgun, jump around corners, and fire from the hip, dropping a person in their tracks. I’ve seen this happen, and it has happened to me, which leads to extreme frustration. This weapon alone could easily hurt the hardcore players’ experience causing this mode to die out in the future.
Do you love the Zombie mode in Call of Duty? Well, sorry to disappoint you, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does not have a Zombie mode at all. As a big fan of the zombie mode, it was disheartening not to see it because all the other ones had one since 2013. Not a deal-breaker for the game at all just when the previous games have this awesome mode with kick-ass music and killing zombies not to have one again; it hurts right in the feelies.
Now the moment you all been waiting for The Campaign. Like I mentioned before, last year’s Call of Duty did not have a campaign, and that earned Activision a lot of flack for not putting one in. Granted, I’m a big fan of the campaign, but a lot of people play it for the multiplayer aspect. This one had an amazing Campaign. The cut scenes, the graphics, the lighting, and even the story was beyond expectations. Not to spoil too much of the campaign, but I would like to mention its worth it. I would say after a year of not having one and coming back with a decent story as well as the cinematics, it’s worth giving a playthrough. The fighting seemed really smooth, and as far as the controls felt very comfortable, I think they did a solid job with the campaign.
I would love to say that Call of Duty, after all the years, has developed into a solid franchise. They have their ups and downs. This installment did very well. The multiplayer felt fresh with new and different modes; it really gave a variety of gameplay. The campaign, as I mentioned, was very enjoyable. I can’t wait to finish it off myself. The thing that disappointed me this year was the No Zombie mode, which again, it’s not a deal-breaker, but with graphics getting more intense and visually appealing would have been nice to see what they could have done with it. Speaking of graphics, I love what they did to enhance the look of the different buildings and landscapes. The shading gave my graphics cards a run for its money on this one. I can only imagine how it would look playing in 4k.
Pros:
- Great Graphics
- Awesome Multiplayer
- Well Designed Campaign
- Tons of weapon Customization
- Different Multiplayer Maps
- Different Multiplayer Game modes
Cons:
- No Zombie Mode
Wagz From the WolvesGamingDen Gives Call of Duty: Modern Warfare a Drastik Measure of 9.0 out of 10 (90)
At the time of this review, the price of the standard edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is at $59.99, which is a fair price for any AAA game nowadays. There are also other editions you can grab for yourself as well, but I would leave it to you guys to figure out what suits you. I would say give this game a look you won’t be disappointed with the multiplayer nor The Campaign. Unfortunately, if you’re looking forward to the Zombie mode, I’m afraid that it’s non-existent.
