When you think of Black Ops 4, you wouldn’t think that Activision and Blizzard would coexist and make a kick-ass game! Two of the biggest powerhouse gaming companies pulled it off, with one of the most anticipated games of 2018! Black Ops, which is mostly known for its zombie series, has pulled it off once again! Black Ops 4 has also released a battle royale into its arsenal called “Blackout”! This year, battle royales seem to be the most played style of gaming. Founders of the battle royale style game play are PUBG and Fortnite! Black Ops 4 took this into consideration and made “Blackout”! With all battle royales, you have a solo option, you have a duo option, and you have a squad option.

Black Ops 4 pulled out all the stops with the making of Blackout. They obviously took a look at what the pioneers did and considered all the feedback that the players gave from games such as PUBG and Fortnite, and they completely optimized the way a battle royale should be. When you first load into blackout, you fall from the sky in a wing suit; then the wait time is pretty quick, especially when you’re waiting for over a hundred people to load in. Once those hundred people load in, the game begins. When playing this game for the first time, it was very nerve-wracking. Not knowing or playing a lot of battle royale type games, tensions were a little high. Unless you’re familiar with how battle royales work, I would stay away from the solo option, maybe start off with some duos-squads are even better! With duos and squads being the better option when first starting out, you tend to work as a team more and it makes it less nerve-wracking. What I learned is communication is key and to work together as a team. Letting your team know where the enemy is shooting from or where the best armor is or if someone needs a gun or ammo; where to find it definitely helps out a lot.

When you take a look at the graphics, you could tell they put a lot of work and everything was put there for a reason! The environment, the way the buildings are laid out, the way they are designed makes the whole game work. The lighting shadow effects and the bright colors work together, almost like a symphony. What’s good about this game, also, especially for PC users, is the ability to use a keyboard and mouse and or plug-and-play with a controller. I like the ability to have options if I’m playing a game, and if I’m using a keyboard and mouse, I can set up key binds to customize it for me. If I feel that I’m going to do better with the controller, at least, I have that option, to be able to switch, which is a huge plus.

Well, let’s just say that battle royale style is not your forte. That’s fine and dandy because they also have multiplayer. In the multiplayer aspect of Black Ops 4, you have different types of game modes. These game modes are team deathmatch, domination, free for all, search and destroy, kill confirmed, hardpoint, control, and heist. I’m sure, for all you Call of Duty fans or Black Ops fans, you know most of these modes already. The newest mode implemented into this game was heist. I would love to describe all of these different multiplayer modes but I’m sure you pretty much know all of them, so what I’m going to focus on is the heist mode. For starters, in heist mode, you use in-game currency to buy weapons ammo and such before the round begins; sounds familiar! So you either have teams of 4v4 or 5v5 to attempt to fight over a bag of cash, which then could be brought to an extraction point to win the round! That’s pretty much how the new game mode works in a nutshell. The multiplayer in Black Ops is never a disappointment.

Finally, it all comes down to this; what Black Ops is mostly known for is its zombie play. I don’t need to go much into detail about this, but I feel I had to mention it just because I’m a big fan of zombies in the Black Ops series. When they brought zombies this time around, I definitely have to say Black Ops 4 has one of the best zombie modes I’ve ever played. Not going to spoil much here but I definitely think it’s worth checking out. So grab four of your mates a can of Mountain Dew and make sure you have no plans booked for that night because the zombie mode is going to take up a lot, if not all of your Friday night!

Black Ops 4 has a lot of different modes for all types of players. They definitely took a look at the fan base and said, “Hey, how can we accommodate everyone?” They pulled out all the stops in this one; they brought back the multiplayer, they brought zombies, and they even reached out and made a battle royale. The one thing that they didn’t do (and it killed me) was have a solo story mode. I’m very disappointed in this aspect because I love a good story; even though I play first person shooters and different types of games, the one thing that always intrigued me about the games was the story. They may have pulled out all the stops in the multiplayer aspect, but they did not add a campaign mode, which is very disappointing in my book.

Black Ops 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the year; they put a lot of work and effort into this franchise and they did an amazing job in so doing. The multiplayer, the battle royale, and zombie mode are all amazing. They definitely did their homework and they pulled out all the stops. What killed it for me (and I’m sure a lot of players like me agree) is the lack of a campaign mode, which is very disappointing. The current price point at this game, at the time of this review, is originally $59.99 on the Blizzard Shop, but it is on sale now at $47.99! That being said, I definitely would recommend to buy this game, even when it’s not on sale at the $47.99 price point! You won’t be disappointed unless, like I said, you are looking for a good campaign storyline, which Black Ops 4 fails to have. I’m going to rate this game 8.0 out of 10, which gives this game a score of 80.
