Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is a visual novel reliving the original Corpse Party as a sequel, prequel, midquel! To explain what Corpse Party is, it’s a visual, horror, point-and-click, adventure game. If you don’t know anything about the history of Corpse Party or what type of game it is, it can be a little nerve-racking! I honestly didn’t know what to expect! I knew it was an adventure, horror game! I love horror games, so it was right up my alley! I decided to play this during stream; I figured, why not, it would be fun to engage my viewers and to get their thoughts about the game as well. There was a lot of reading; playing the game for five hours and reading all the captions out loud was a task in itself.

The graphics in this game look amazing, for someone who loves anime and that art style like myself; I knew it was going to be good! The voices were done really well as well as the story in the beginning, leading up to the point where you finally get control of your character. Without spoiling too much of the story line, I will try to keep it as vague as possible. In the game, there are eight episodes. Each episode has multiple endings that you can find in the game. When I played the game, I made it a point to find the different endings in each episode. A lot of the endings were very brutal in that they were bloody and gory! That’s right-I said it, BLOODY and GORY!

The game’s graphics are simple and fun; your imagination can really drag you into it. As you play the story, you really feel the pain of each character you play in different episodes. In each episode, you play as a different character and live through their perspective on what’s going on with them when they get put into a different realm! Eventually, each student that was involved has their own story that all ties together! Let’s talk about how the characters got dragged into this mess. They decided to do a ritual where they will be friends forever, but the ritual went wrong and they travel back in time and are now in a place known as Heavenly Host Elementary School.

Inside Heavenly Host Elementary School, there was a tragic accident that involved some of the students there. As the story unfolds, you eventually find out what happened to the elementary students and why they are still there haunting the school; again, I don’t want to spoil too much of the story. As each episode unlocks and you go through the different endings, only the right one will advance to the next episode. What I truly love about this game is how if you make a wrong choice, it can make the difference between life and death! BE PREPARED TO QUICK SAVE OFTEN! The last thing you need is to make a wrong choice and not save beforehand.

The controls were very easy to use, but there was no tutorial, which is fine cause the controls and the game play were easy enough to understand! As far as progressing in where to go or what to do, it was pretty self-explanatory. That being said, if there was something you had to find, it was right there in front of your face. Not only that but if you needed something in that room, they usually tell you in the story that, hey, maybe we should check out this room now that we have the so-and-so.

I, personally, think Corpse Party: Book of Shadows was a great game! I feel the story was well made. The controls were easy. The game play was a lot of fun! The graphics and art style were outstanding; it was hard to find anything really negative to talk about. For a person who had never known what visual novels were or even what Corpse Party was, I really enjoyed it! I never thought I would be a person to review this style of game but I’m happy that I did! As far as the price point, at the time of this review, the price for Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is $14.99 USD, which is, in my opinion, a great price point for this game! If you are a person who loves horror or visual novels, then this game is for you!
