Fairytale: Three Heroes is an action RPG by Russian-based developer Cats Who Play.

The story begins when Alesha, a hero who had already saved his homeland once, is attacked by bandits. The bandit leader tells him that the Slavic country is being besieged by a mysterious monster on one side and Teutons and Lithuanians on the other. Alesha decides to grab his companions and work on saving the country yet again.

The game is very brightly-colored and well-designed graphically with lovable character models. They make very good use of cell-shading without overpowering the effect. Graphic settings are fairly standard with resolutions of 800 x 600 up to 1920 x 1080, with fullscreen and windowed mode. You can adjust various detail settings such as brightness, shadow, and visibility.

The audio for the game has endearing sounds and effects, and cut-scenes contain a fully-voiced cast of interesting and humorous dialogue.

Now, there are various gameplay mechanics in Fairytale: Three Heroes. First off is the fact that you can control 1 of 3 characters at any given time once they are discovered. The levels consist of a single map with objectives scattered about. Once completed, levels will display useful information such as how many total enemies were killed and how many items were found. T also displays how much experience each character earned.

Now I mentioned that you can switch between characters. The reason for that mechanic is that some objectives can only be solved by a certain character. You can issue commands like telling those you’re not in control of to wait or come to your location.

Each character has his own unique skill tree based on their weapons. Alesha is an archer and uses bow-based skills. Dobrynya uses stave and spear skills. And so on for the next character you receive.

Be careful with how you spend your points as they are nonrefundable.

There are a few bad things about the game to keep in mind, however. The game is very punishing if you don’t pay attention. When you’re close to water, it instantly kills you. You can only save at the start of the level, so if you mess up, you’ll have to redo the entire level again. Sometimes, the audio also feels a bit off during cut-scenes. Let’s move on to the wrap up for this lovely game.

Graphics are bloody amazing for cell-shading.

It has quirky and unique characters.

It reminds me of old SNES games I used to love.

For the price of $9.99 USD on Steam, it is well worth buying the game.

BoxCatHero gives Fairytale: Three Heroes a Drastik Measure 8.0 out of 10.0 (80).
